Where to Set It
The words per second setting in Bits is your default speaking pace. The app uses it to estimate how long a bit will take when you have auto timing turned on for that bit. Setting it to match how you actually speak makes length estimates and set planning more accurate.
- Open the More tab.
- Tap Words per second (or the row that shows this setting). You’ll see a number (e.g. 4). Change it to match your typical performance pace. The value is saved automatically.
What It Affects
- Auto timing – For any bit that has “Auto timing” on (in bit properties > Length), Bits estimates the bit’s length as: (word count) ÷ (words per second). So if you set 4 words per second and the bit has 80 words, the estimated length is 20 seconds.
- Set length – When your bits use auto timing, the total set length is the sum of those estimates. That helps you hit a 5-, 10-, or 15-minute slot.
- Consistency – One global value keeps all auto-timed bits using the same pace assumption. Use “Time me” on individual bits when you want a length based on your real delivery instead.
Choosing a Value
- Typical range – Many people speak at about 2–4 words per second when performing (including pauses). Start with something like 3 or 4 and adjust after you’ve timed a few bits with “Time me”; if your “Time me” lengths are usually longer than the auto estimate, try a lower words-per-second value.
- Faster or slower – If you deliver quickly, you might use 4–5; if you pause a lot, try 2–3. The goal is for auto timing to feel close to how long bits actually take when you perform them.
For how to use auto timing and “Time me” on a bit, see “How to time your bits and use Time me in Bits.”
